Dr. Prasad Rao Dr. Prasad Rao
Chairman, BIDA

Dr. Prasad Rao was born in Andhra Pradesh on 21st March 1949 and graduated from Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam in 1973. He came to England in November 1973 and did various hospital jobs, mainly in surgical specialities, before pursuing a career in General Practice. He did General Practice vocational training in Stone and Rugeley in Staffordshire and in April 1982 became a GP in Stoke-on-Trent.

Originally a 'two-doctor' practice, Belgrave Medical Centre, which is a privately owned purpose-built Medical Centre, it now employs 5.5 doctors with a full complement of 'practice staff' and cares for about 11,000 patients. Dr Prasad Rao's wife, Dr Mohini Rao also works at Belgrave Medical Centre as a GP and they have two sons who are both at Medical School (in Liverpool and Trinidad respectively).

Dr. Prasad Rao has been actively involved in Medical Politics since 1990 and has acquired considerable experience and expertise, particularly from the days of 'fund-holding' as well as in 'total-purchasing'. He is very much involved in BMA and Local Medical Committee (LMC) activities. During the 'fund-holding' time, Dr. Prasad Rao set up one of the biggest multi-funds as the founder-chairman of the largest co-operative in the country. Founded in 1994, the co-operative has changed its name and is now known as 'North Staffordshire Urgent Care'. It covers 255 GPs and provides 'out-of-hours' care for half a million people in and around Stoke-on-Trent.

Dr. Prasad Rao has run a Clinical Audit Group for the past 15 years which meets on the first Tuesday of each month. He has progressed from being Chairman of the PCG to the PEC, Chairman of South Stoke and is presently involved in amalgamating North Stock PCT with South Stoke PCT.

As well as being the National Chairman of the British International Doctors' Association, Dr Prasad Rao is currently the President of the Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Division of BIDA which hosted a very successful ARM/AGM in 2005.
