Press Releases
4TH
July 2007 (Terrorism related arrests of NHS
doctors)
National Chairman, BIDA
Chairman, Junior Doctors
Forum BIDA
Press release by the National Chairman, BIDA
The
British International Doctors’ Association is
shocked and horrified to note that some
international doctors are currently incriminated
in terrorist type activities.
Perhaps the most enduring and certainly the most
quoted traditions in the history of Medicine is
the ‘Hippocratic Oath’. Ours is a very
noble profession and one of the most important
principles underlying this most ancient Oath is
that it is the duty of a doctor to never
deliberately harm anyone in another person’s or
peoples’ interest. It is indeed dreadful that
the recent incidents that have taken place over
the past 72 hours have truly shattered the trust
that people have in this most noble and caring
profession.
It
is most regrettable that highly educated,
talented individuals from overseas have been
allegedly involved in acts of terrorism. The
British International Doctors’ Association
unreservedly condemns any form of terrorism and
most importantly as an organisation that
represents overseas doctors in the United
Kingdom, we believe that those responsible for
engaging or supporting any act of terrorism must
be held accountable.
Prasad Rao (Dr)
National Chairman of BIDA
Press release by the Junior Doctors' Forum, BIDA
Over
the past three decades, International Medical
Graduates (IMGs) have made a significant
contribution to the NHS. Comprising a third of
the NHS workforce, we are very proud of the fact
that overseas doctors are clearly the
‘backbone’ and ‘workhorses’ of the National
Health Service.
On
behalf of the Junior Doctors Forum of the
British International Doctors Association
(BIDA), it is a matter of great shock to learn
about the recent terrorist attempts in London
and Glasgow and that overseas doctors who have
worked in the NHS have been held as suspects in
relation to these incidents.
One
of the major roles of the General Medical
Council UK, is to ensure that doctors are fit to
practice as clinicians in the UK. It is now
mandatory for the employing NHS Trusts to carry
out various checks on all doctors, and these
include a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)
clearance before allowing to work or deal with
patients.
The
Junior Doctors Forum of the BIDA condemns any
form of terrorism and as an organisation that
represent overseas doctors during their training
in the UK, we too believe that those responsible
for engaging or supporting any act of terrorism
must be held accountable.
